How It Began

Darin T. Okuda, M.D., M.Sc., F.A.A.N., F.A.N.A., was the first to quantify the magnitude of unused specialty medicines and the reasons behind the waste

Darin T. Okuda, a neuroimmunologist specializing primarily in the care of people with multiple sclerosis wondered where unused treatments, having a retail cost of nearly $100,000 a year, ended up. After realizing the magnitude of unused medications in the hands of people with multiple sclerosis, he designed and created a system that enables the recovery of these treatments. The recovered medication and acquired clinical data captured from users allows people, manufacturers, and agencies to learn from the experiences of people such that healthcare outcomes can be improved at a reduced cost. This work also lead to the creation of an original intelligent platform capable of predicting early medication discontinuation and factors that enhance medication persistence.

In total, Dr. Okuda has collected nearly $30 million in unused specialty medicine waste
